Nylon, Wire, & Yarn, Oh My!

Another Iron in the Fire

Posted by: Jen Nipps on: July 14, 2009

I already write, sell Avon, do medical transcription, and make jewlry, so what possessed me to start to crochet?

That’s actually an easy answer. I wanted to be able to crochet wire for some bracelets and (maybe) necklaces.

I have to start with yarn, though, before I can even think about trying wire. My first project was a single-crochet dishcloth. It’s not finished yet. My second project was a double-crochet dishcloth. It’s…as finished as I can get it at the moment. Why?

I’m out of yellow yarn.

I don’t know if it’s lopsided because I stretched it more as I worked on it or if I accidentally increased a few times. Either way, for a first completed project, I’m pretty pleased with it.

Then again, it could be that I’m easily impressed.

For a first project that is very respectable. The lopsided bit probably comes from stretching it a bit and not having developed 100% perfect even stiches. The more you practice, the closer to even you’ll get (or, if you’re like me, the sooner you’ll realize you’ve totally changed your stich size and pull apart and redo less to fix it).

I think it’s awesome that you’re learning so that you’ll eventually be able to learn to crochet wire for jewelery and such. Crocheting wire is something I’d eventually like to be able to do as well, so I’ll definitely be watching this space to see how you are progressing and get inspired!

Thanks. :)

I think part of it was stretching, but a cousin of mine and I sat down and counted stitches. The chain has 35 but the top row has 45. So there was some increasing going on.

I still really like how it turned out. :)
